Procedure and Costs

Overview

Below figure gives an overview on all certificates that can be awarded based on the various curricula for Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience (CPUX).
All certification tests can be taken in English and in German. CPUX-F can also be taken in Chinese. The certification tests are conducted by certification providers accredited by UXQB. All details about the examination procedure are contained in the examination regulations for each certificate, i.e. CPUX-F, CPUX-M, CPUX-UR, CPUX-DS and CPUX-UT

The following two of our certifications are based solely on a multiple-choice examination containing 40 test questions:
  • Foundation level (CPUX-F)
  • Essentials in UX and HCD Management (CPUX-M)
Having passed the Foundation level certification examination (CPUX-F), the UXQB offers Advanced certifications in below areas of competency. In general, an Advanced certification confirms, that the candidate has advanced theoretical knowledge (theoretical part of the certification examination) as well as practical skills (practical part of the certification examination).

The following Advanced certifications are offered:
  • User Requirements Engineering (CPUX-UR, theoretical part and practical part)
  • Designing Solutions (CPUX-DS, theoretical part and practical part)
  • Usability Testing and Evaluation (CPUX-UT, theoretical part and practical part)
The theoretical part of the examinations for these advanced certifications is also based on a multiple-choice examination with 40 questions. Details of the practical examinations are described in the respective examination regulations.

However, some candidates only aim at confirmation of advanced theoretical knowledge. Therefore, it is also possible to acquire Advanced certification based on the theoretical part of the examination only. UXQB recommends taking the theoretical examination and the practical examination to give evidence on both approved theoretical knowledge and approved practical skills.
  • User Requirements Engineering (CPUX-UR, theoretical part)
  • Designing Solutions (CPUX-DS, theoretical part)
  • Usability Testing and Evaluation (CPUX-UT, theoretical part)
Almost all preparatory trainings in our training schedule are followed by a certification examination conducted by an accredited certification provider. Simply select a preparatory training and register with the recognized training provider directly. You can also register for a certification test directly with a certification provider in case you don’t want to take a preparatory training.

How to take each certification examination (remote, in a test center, in-class)

Remote examination

Most professionals seeking for certification prefer to take the certification examination remotely from their home or their office desk while being instructed and observed by a remote examiner. Remote examination allows candidates to pick a date and time that suits them.
Remote certification examinations using a notebook from any location are offered for all multi-ple-choice examinations, i.e.
  • Foundation level (CPUX-F)
  • User Requirements Engineering (CPUX-UR, theoretical part)
  • Designing Solutions (CPUX-DS, theoretical part)
  • Usability Testing and Evaluation (CPUX-UT, theoretical part)
For the following practical parts of Advanced certifications, remote examination is also offered based on sealed paper documents that are sent to the candidate:
  • User Requirements Engineering (CPUX-UR, practical part)
  • Designing Solutions (CPUX-DS, practical part)
The paper documents containing the test tasks are supplied in a sealed envelope by the cer-tification provider to the candidate before the examination starts and must be returned in a sealed envelope after the examination. Candidates are instructed and observed by a remote examiner during the examination. Details of the procedure can be found in the documents CPUX-UR – Examination Regulations and CPUX-DS – Examination Regulations.
For the practical part of the examination for the Advanced certification “Usability Testing and Evaluation” no remote examination is offered, since the examination is a home exercise that consists of planning, conducting and documenting the results of a usability test that have to be handed in afterwards. Details can be found in the document CPUX-UT – Examination Regulations.

Examination in a test center (Pearson Vue or Prometric)

Test centers offer candidates to take the certification examination within one of their centers at their computers after participants have registered an appointment with the test center.
Test centers offer to take the following multiple-choice certification examinations:
  • Foundation level (CPUX-F)
  • User Requirements Engineering (CPUX-UR, theoretical part)
  • Designing Solutions (CPUX-DS, theoretical part)
  • Usability Testing and Evaluation (CPUX-UT, theoretical part)
Pearson Vue Test Center

In-class examination

In-class examination is offered for all certifications. In-class examination typically takes place in conjunction with a preparatory training. The candidates are all situated in one seminar room.
  • For multiple-choice certification examinations, the examination typically takes place one hour after the preparatory training has been completed. an external examiner hands out the test tasks in paper form or on a tablet (for each candidate) and collects the completed test tasks after the time specified in the corresponding examination regulations (75 minutes or 90 minutes).
  • For the practical parts of Advanced certifications in “User Requirements Engineering” (CPUX-UR) and “Designing Solutions (CPUX-DS) the examinations typically take place the day after the training has taken place. Details of the procedure can be found in the documents CPUX-UR – Examination Regulations and CPUX-DS – Examination Regulations
